Know Where You Stand: The Rosenberg Survey’s Three Benchmarking Products Explained

The Rosenberg Survey has been one of the accounting profession’s trusted sources of benchmarking data for CPA firms. Every year, hundreds of firms submit their financial and operational data, and every year that data gets turned into tools that help firm leaders make smarter decisions.

But not every firm knows exactly what’s available or why it matters. Here’s a breakdown of our three products and what each one can do for your firm.

The Rosenberg Survey Report

This report is the foundation of everything we do. The annual Rosenberg Survey Report compiles data from all participating firms into a comprehensive analysis of where the profession stands today.

The report includes detailed financial and operational benchmarks broken out by revenue band, so a $5M firm isn’t comparing itself to a $50M firm’s numbers. You’ll find in-depth analysis of trends shaping the profession, insights from the profession’s leading consultants and row-by-row data covering everything from income per equity partner and realization rates to staff turnover, charge hours, service mix, and succession planning.

The 2026 Report will be available for purchase in late September.

The Sortable Excel Dataset

For firms and consultants who want to go deeper than the report allows, the Excel dataset puts the full anonymized data from all 296 participating firms directly in your hands.

Every firm’s data, every metric, every column — fully anonymized and all in a clean, filterable spreadsheet. Sort by revenue band to see only firms your size. Filter by region to compare yourself to geographic peers. Rank firms by any metric to understand where the top performers pull ahead.

This is the product for the managing partner who wants to build their own comparisons, the consultant who advises multiple firms and needs a flexible data source, or the firm administrator who wants to dig into the numbers beyond what any pre-built report can show.

The Excel dataset is available to participants at a discounted rate and to non-participants as a standalone purchase.

The Custom Analysis – Participant Exclusive

This is the most powerful product we offer and it’s only available to firms that participate in the survey.

The Custom Analysis is a personalized benchmarking report built specifically for your firm. Rather than comparing yourself to broad national averages, you see exactly how your firm ranks on more than 20 key metrics against firms in your specific revenue band. Income per equity partner, realization, utilization, revenue per person, staff turnover, charge hours, and growth are all benchmarked against your true peers, not the profession at large.

Your results are benchmarked four ways: against all Rosenberg Survey participants, against firms in your specific revenue band, against Elite firms (the top 25% of performers by income per equity partner) and against your own prior year data if your firm participated the previous year. That year-over-year comparison is particularly valuable, letting you track whether your firm is gaining ground, holding steady, or slipping on the metrics that matter most. Color-coded quartile rankings make it immediately clear where your firm is leading, where it’s average and where there’s room to close the gap.

This is the product that turns benchmarking from an interesting exercise into an actionable conversation. Managing partners use it to make the case for strategic changes to their partners. Firms use it year over year to track their progress.

If you’re already participating in the survey, this is the most valuable add-on you’re not taking advantage of.

Why Benchmarking Matters

The firms that perform best year after year are rarely the ones working the hardest. They’re the ones who know where they stand, understand what the top performers are doing differently, and make deliberate decisions about where to close the gap.

That’s what the Rosenberg Survey is built to help you do. Whether you purchase the report for a broad view of the profession, the Excel dataset to run your own analysis, or the Custom Analysis to see exactly where your firm ranks, you’re investing in the clarity that good decisions require.
