2021 Was the “Most Challenging” Year for Accounting Firms

In this article, National Taxpayer Advocate, Erin M. Collins, released her annual report to congress and deemed 2021 as the “most challenging year taxpayers and tax professionals have ever experienced.” A few issues that IRS caused in 2021 included “delays by the IRS in processing tax returns and taxpayer correspondence, overwhelmed telephone assistance, and shortcomings in the Service’s relatively new online taxpayer tool.” Collins goes further saying only around 11% of customers would get through to talk to a customer service representative, and also had a wait time of about 23 minutes. However, to the IRS’s credit, they deployed some new programs admitted by congress that helped give child tax credits to more than 36 million families.
